چکیده

Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined weekly during gestation averaging 283 +/- 2 d in Ethiopian zebu (Bos indicus) cows. Mean progesterone levels increased from 0.2 +/- 0.1 ng/ml at oestrus (service) to 3.1 +/- 1.6 ng/ml on d 7 and 8.1 +/- 2.1 ng/ml on d 21. Progesterone levels remained elevated throughout pregnancy. Hormone concentration differed significantly between cows (P less than 0.001) and with the wk of pregnancy (P less than 0.05); it tended to be higher during the last trimester of pregnancy. Mean levels dropped sharply to below 1 ng/ml during the last wk of pregnancy with considerable variation (C.V. = 39 to 63%) among cows. These data indicate that pregnancy in Ethiopian zebu cows can be reliably diagnosed by determining circulatory plasma progesterone levels.

Influence of suckling and continuous cow-calf association on the resumption of post-partum ovarian function in Bos indicus cows monitored by plasma progesterone profiles.

The effect of suckling on post-partum ovarian function was monitored by weekly plasma progesterone determinations using enzyme immunoassay in 16 Small East African Zebu (Bos indicus) cows maintained with a fertile bull. Five cows continuously suckled their calves (COS), but starting 30 d after calving 6 cows remained with their calves which were prevented from suckling using nose plates (NOS) w...

The effect of anticoagulant, storage time and temperature, and sodium azide on blood progesterone concentrations

BLOOD PROGESTERONE concentrations in zebu cows were measured at ILCA's research station in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. Progesterone concentrations in unseparated plasma and serum samples declined rapidly, particularly at high storage temperatures (35°C). The commonly used anticoagulants––lithium heparin, sodium citrate and ethylene diaminetetracetate––did not significantly affect the measured conce...

The Effect of GnRH vs No-GnRH at the Initiation of a 7-d CIDR Synchronization Treatment on AI Pregnancy Rates in Postpartum Lactating Angus and Bos indicus x Bos taurus Cows1,2

Bos indicus x Bos taurus (n=251) and Angus (n=323) cows received a progesterone containing device called an Eazi-BreedTM CIDR® for 7 d with a prostaglandinF2a (PGF2a) injection at CIDR removal. At CIDR insertion half the cows received a GnRH injection and half did not. Upon CIDR removal, half the cows in both GnRH and No-GnRH groups were equally divided into two AI treatment groups: 1) injectio...

Serum progesterone profiles of zebu cattle (Bos indicus) in relationship to conception and repeat breeding after artificial insemination.

Sixty-four zebu cows, comprised mainly of Bunaji cattle aged between 3 and 7 years old, were involved in an intensive artificial insemination programme. The study was conducted during the breeding period (May-October), and cows were inseminated with freshly prepared Friesian semen when they stood to be mounted by the vasectomised bull or herdmates. Fertility was measured by serum progesterone (...

On d 0 of the experiment Bos indicus x Bos taurus (n=130) cows received an injection of GnRH and a progesterone-releasing device called an Eazi-BreedTM CIDR® for 7 d with a prostaglandin F2a injection at CIDR removal. Upon CIDR removal cows were divided into two AI treatments: 1) injection of estradiol cypionate (ECP) 24 h after CIDR removal with AI 8 to 10 h after a detected estrus and timed-A...
